Range Repair

Ignition, simmer and griddle faults on Viking sealed-burner and dual-fuel ranges.

Gas range with the front burner in pieces, its igniter electrode exposed and the oven door lowered

02 Said on the phone

Any one of these is enough to work with.

  • Burner sparks over and over and never catches
  • Flame burns orange and soots the bottom of a pan
  • Simmer setting drops out as soon as the vent hood runs high
  • Grill or griddle section stops lighting after a dust storm

What changed, and roughly when it changed, is worth more to us than a guess at the part. Say it in your own words — nobody here needs the correct term for it.

03 On the meter

What gets measured before a part is named.

Ohms across the spark module
Every electrode gets a resistance reading and a gap measurement before anything is condemned. A burner that clicks forever is usually a fouled electrode or a switch that has taken one spill too many, and those two read nothing alike on a meter.
Manifold pressure at the tap
A gauge on the manifold, checked against the rating plate for the gas actually supplied to the house. An orange flame that soots the bottom of a pan is pressure or an orifice out of spec far more often than it is a worn burner.
Ports, caps and the venturi
Caps off, ports cleared, venturi checked for what a dust storm leaves behind. This is what a simmer setting is doing when it drops out the moment the vent hood goes to high, and finding it costs you no parts at all.

04In their words

Range Repair calls, in the customer’s words.

Three Phoenix jobs on this side of the kitchen: what it was doing, what it turned out to be, what it took.

  • Two burners were burning orange and sooting my pans underneath. He found the caps sitting off-centre and the ports full of dust blowing off the mountain. Cleaned, reseated, burning blue again.

    Consuelo B.South Mountain

  • The grill section quit lighting right after a dust storm rolled through. Grit had packed the venturi solid. He cleared it, checked the other burners for the same, and said to cap it during monsoon season.

    Elodie M.Estrella

  • Bungalow kitchen, very tight fit, and the range had stopped sparking on every burner. A wire had chafed through against the frame. He repaired the harness instead of selling me a whole spark board.
